'Terra Nova' aims to be a dinosaur-sized hit
By Bill Keveney, USA TODAY

Dinosaurs are far from the only big thing about Fox's Terra Nova.
With one of the most expensive TV pilots ever (roughly $15 million), Steven Spielberg as an executive producer, location shooting in Australia and state-of-the-art special effects so complex that they delayed production, the prehistoric drama is one of the most anticipated new shows of the fall season, with a two-hour premiere Monday (8 p.m. ET/PT).

Heroes: Justice League of America (New Earth)
We exist... to maintain international peace. And to that end: to take measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and for the suppression of acts of aggression... whether they be terrestrial in origin or otherwise. We exist... to foster the principles of equal rights and self-determination of all peoples -- and to take other appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace to the best of our abilities. We exist... because those with the power to stop injustice simply must. We are the Justice League of America.

Scarlett Johansson as Natalia Romanova from Iron Man 2
Black Widow (Natalia Romanova)
Black Widow is also featured in the short story Love Is Blindness, where she instigates a humorous fight with Elektra over Daredevil’s affections. The comic is stylized to look like Japanese animation and uses images, not words, inside the speech and thought bubbles to convey what the characters are saying/thinking.
In 2010, the year in which the character, called only Natasha Romanova, made her film debut in Iron Man 2, the Black Widow received two separate miniseries. Black Widow and the Marvel Girls was an all-ages, four-issue series that chronicled her adventures with various women of the Marvel Universe, including Storm, She-Hulk, the Enchantress, and Spider-Woman. It was written by Paul Tobin, with art by Salvador Espin and Takeshi Miyazawa. The second four-issue miniseries, Black Widow: Deadly Origin, was written by Paul Cornell, and featured art by Tom Raney and John Paul Leon.

Limited series and specials
Aside from the arcs in Marvel Fanfare and Journey into Mystery, the Black Widow has starred in four limited series and four graphic novels.
The three-issue Black Widow (June–Aug. 1999), under the Marvel Knights imprint, starred Romanova and fully introduced her appointed successor, Captain Yelena Belova, who had briefly appeared in an issue of the 1999 series Inhumans. The writer for the story arc, “The Itsy-Bitsy Spider” was Devin K. Grayson while J. G. Jones was the artist. The next three-issue, Marvel Knights mini-series, also titled Black Widow (Jan.-March 2001) featured both Black Widows in the story arc “Breakdown”, by writers Devin Grayson and Greg Rucka with painted art by Scott Hampton.
Romanova next starred in another solo miniseries titled Black Widow (Nov. 2004 – April 2005), also under the Marvel Knights imprint and written by science fiction novelist Richard K. Morgan, with art initially by Bill Sienkiewicz and later by Sienkiewicz over Goran Parlov layouts. A six-issue sequel, Black Widow: The Things They Say About Her (Nov. 2005 – April 2006; officially Black Widow 2: The Things They Say About Her in the series’ postal indicia), by writer Morgan, penciller Sean Phillips, and inker Sienkiewicz, picks up immediately where the previous miniseries left off, continuing the story using many of the same characters.
She starred in the solo graphic novel Black Widow: The Coldest War (April 1990), and co-starred in three more: Punisher/Black Widow: Spinning Doomsday’s Web (Dec. 1992); Daredevil/Black Widow: Abattoir (July 1993); and Nick Fury/Black Widow: Death Duty (June 1995), also co-starring Marvel UK’s Night Raven.

The Black Widow’s first appearances were as a recurring, non-costumed, Soviet-spy antagonist in the feature “Iron Man”, beginning in Tales of Suspense #52 (April 1964). Five issues later, she recruited the besotted costumed archer and later superhero Hawkeye to her cause. Her government later supplied her with her first Black Widow costume and high-tech weaponry, but she eventually defected to the United States after appearing, temporarily brainwashed against the U.S., in the superhero-team series The Avengers #29 (July 1966). The Widow later became a recurring ally of the team before officially becoming its sixteenth member.
The Black Widow appeared for the first time in her trademark skintight black costume in The Amazing Spider-Man #86 (July 1970). In short order, she starred in her own series in Amazing Adventures #1–8 (Aug. 1970 – Sept. 1971), sharing that split book with the feature Inhumans. Immediately after her initial solo feature ended, the Black Widow co-starred in Daredevil #81–124 (Nov. 1971 – Aug. 1975) and then in the super-team series The Champions, which ran 17 issues (Oct. 1975 – Jan. 1978).

Heroes: Rating TV’s Wonder Woman costumes
Heroes: Rating TV’s Wonder Woman costumes
How does the 2011 TV pilot look stack up?
Move over, Helen of Troy. The lovely and talented Adrianne Palicki’s is the face that launched a thousand comments:
Or perhaps it was her costume that did it?
The collective Internet response to the new TV Wonder Woman pilot costume looks to be spread evenly between an indifferent “meh” and outrage, with fan-made costume retouches cropping up online almost immediately – just like what happened with the Wonder Woman costume redesign that debuted in August 2010.
But how does this latest attempt at Wonder Woman’s outfit compare to previous attempts at capturing the comic amazon’s look on the small screen?
Contender 1: Cathy Lee Crosby starred in a made-for-TV Wonder Woman movie that was the first attempt at adapting the character to TV… by changing everything about her, omitting her ability for superhuman feats, secret identity, and of course: the costume.
Contender 2: Lynda Carter in the well-known 1976 series that aired on ABC and CBS, which was actually a fair adaptation and compromise of the original World War II-era Wonder Woman costume and the later iconic look. It’s also an acceptable look when compared to the Christopher Reeves look in the 1978 Superman movie, though it is admittedly cheaper looking.
Contender 3: Smallville’s Erica Durance, who plays Lois Lane, went for the Amazon look in the Smallville episode “Warrior,” which involves a comic book convention and Zatanna and a bunch of other things. Regardless of that show’s convolutions, this costume is a more realistic take of Wonder Woman’s look that wouldn’t look too out of place in a The Dark Knight-esque take on the character – or a crossover romp in the Xena: Warrior Princess universe. Too bad it was wasted on a “wink-wink, nudge-nudge” type scenario on Smallville.
So, does the 2011 costume really look worse than a one-episode outfit from the notoriously low-budget Smallville, or does the shiny really work you?

Gnomes: Cute garden dwellers or little villains?
Gnomes: Cute garden dwellers or little villains?
By Susan Wloszczyna, USA TODAY
Consider the lowly garden gnome.
Whether mud-caked, faded or battered by adverse weather, they are steadfast in their silent sentry ship. And, much like their cousins in outdoor décor — the plastic pink flamingo — they often elicit strong responses.
Some find the wee, hirsute statues with their pointy caps, jolly demeanor and peasant attire to be irresistibly cute. Others simply dismiss the stone imps as tacky yard clutter.
There are also those who find them downright creepy. Actress Emily Blunt, who provides the voice for the gnomish version of Shakespeare's heroine in the new 3-D animated comedy Gnomeo & Juliet — which sprouted $25.4 million at the box office this past weekend — has confessed that the sight of little bearded men loitering about the lawn scared her as a child. Not surprising since, as folklore has it, the ornaments often come to life whenever humans aren't around — a key element in Gnomeo's story line.

Heroes: NBC Picks Up Wonder Woman Pilot
Heroes: NBC Picks Up Wonder Woman Pilot
Finally, some good news regarding Wonder Woman! Contrary to what was said in the press weeks ago, THR confirms that NBC has picked up David E. Kelley's version of Wonder Woman to pilot. Apparently, NBC and the other television networks first passed on the project due to budgetary reasons but, last month, Kelley hinted that the show might finally get a chance to land on the small screen as soon as next year.
"I think the likelihood is we'll see it next year. I'm being optimistic but I don't think I'm being unrealistic." he told THR in mid-January. He also hinted that NBC would be a perfect fit for the series.
"I like to think of it as a smart script and I know [new NBC programming chief Bob Greenblatt] responds to smart material." He added that the character will not only be a superhero but a "real complex woman".
Now, let´s just hope it gets picked up as a proper TV series!

Death Note (デスノート)
Genre: Mystery, Psychological thriller, Supernatural thriller, Drama
Death Note (デスノート, Desu Nōto) is a manga created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and manga artist Takeshi Obata. The main character is Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook, the "Death Note", dropped on Earth by a god of death, or a shinigami, named Ryuk. The Death Note grants its user the ability to kill anyone whose name and face they know, by writing the name in the notebook while picturing their face. The series centers around Light's attempt to create and rule a world "cleansed of evil" as "God" using the notebook, and the efforts of a detective known as L to stop him.
Death Note was first serialized in 108 chapters by Shueisha in the Japanese manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump from December 2003 to May 2006. The series was also published in tankōbon format in Japan starting in May 2004 and ending in October 2006 with a total of twelve volumes. The series was adapted into live-action films released in Japan on June 17, 2006, November 3, 2006, and February 2, 2008. The anime series aired in Japan from October 3, 2006, to June 26, 2007. Composed of 37 episodes, the anime was developed by Madhouse and directed by Tetsuro Araki. A light novel based on the series, written by Nisio Isin, was released in Japan. Additionally, various video games have been published by Konami for Nintendo DS.
Viz Media licensed the Death Note manga in North America and has published all the twelve volumes from the series, a 13th volume which serves as a "reader's guide", as well as the light novels. The episodes from the anime first appeared in North America as downloadable by IGN. Viz later licensed the anime series and it aired on Bionix. The live-action films briefly played in certain North American theaters since 2008. However, none of the video games titles have thus far been published in North America.
Several publications for manga, anime and other media have added praise and criticism on the Death Note series. The series was banned in a few Chinese cities due to piracy.
On April 30, 2009, Variety magazine announced that Warner Bros. acquired the rights for the Death Note manga to be adapted into a live-action movie in the United States. Warner Bros. has hired screenwriters Charley and Vlas Parlapanides to adapt the manga into a screenplay. Unlike the Japanese Death Note live-action movie trilogy, the US-version will be directly adapted from the material in the manga and will not follow the storyline of the Japanese movie adaptations. On January 13, 2011, it was announced that Shane Black has been hired to direct the film, with the script being written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry.

Nami (ナミ), One Piece
Nami (ナミ) is a fictional character in the One Piece franchise created by Eiichiro Oda. She is based on Ann and Silk, two characters from Oda's previous manga Romance Dawn. She is introduced as a thief and pickpocket who possesses skills to tell the climate and draw sea charts. At first, she is a subordinate of the fishman Arlong, but she eventually turns on him and permanently joins Monkey D. Luffy for her dream to write the complete map of the Grand Line.
In One Piece, Nami is the Straw Hat Pirates' navigator who dreams of drawing sea charts to the Grand Line. She meets other characters, such as Luffy, with whom she travels to help him on his journey. Despite her initial distrust of pirates, Nami eventually changes her mind. Nami is depicted as an intelligent girl who has an obsession of obtaining money. Nami is able to use her three-sectioned staff and use her climate skills to create powerful effects; the most prominent is the Clima-Takt, in which she manipulates the climate to create weather-based attacks.
